BiographyDavid Francis Cargo (January 13, 1929 – July 5, 2013) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 22nd governor of New Mexico. Cargo was born in Dowagiac, Michigan and received A Bachelor of Arts (1951) and a Master of Arts (1953) from the University of Michigan. He represented the Albuquerque area in the New Mexico House of Representatives from 1963 to 1967 and was 37 when he was elected governor in 1967. He was elected to a second term in 1968. During his first campgaing for governor, he was known as "Lonesome Dave."
