DescriptionThis Shaker-style chair was owned by Kit Carson during the mid-19th century. A fur trapper and frontiersman, Carson became well known for leading expeditions into the American Southwest, playing a key role in the United States’ westward expansion. The chair features a tall, three-rail backrest and a woven plant fiber seat. The two back legs extend seamlessly into the backrest, a common design element in Shaker chairs of that period. Seven supporting rails connect the four legs, and the wood shows signs of discoloration from age and continued use.
