DescriptionThis elegant velvet side chair was produced in the mid-19th century. With a red velvet upholstered seat, backrest, and armrests, the chair was created as a status symbol and must have been delicately handmade with great care and precision. It is primarily constructed from dark wood, beautifully embellished with delicate etchings. The backrest features a solid wood panel with a velvet cushion in the center and two engraved carvings of potted flowers on either side. Above the cushion, a horizontal floral pattern is carved, crowned by an abstract winged floral figure at the top of the backrest. Two armrests extend from the backrest, each fitted with velvet cushions and adorned with lion engravings on the front face. The lower half of the chair is equally elegant: the supporting rails of the seat are decorated with floral carvings, including a motif similar to that on the backrest. The two front legs are intricately carved to resemble an eagle’s foot, with a line of feathers leading down to a scaled foot clutching a ball in its talon. In contrast, the two back legs are left undecorated. This chair is a testament to the delicate craftsmanship of 19th-century furniture makers and reflects the opulence and elegance expected by those of wealth from their furnishings. On View
