DescriptionA thin silver bracelet with rectangular turquoise stone at the center. Featuring a densely decorated surface, the central stone is flanked by bands of filigreed rope, hammered points, and a comb of tightly engraved lines. Continuing toward the open end of the bracelet, repoussé “buttons” are arranged symmetrically alongside small sprays of vegetal or feather designs, followed by an additional large button projecting above the surface on either side. Finally, paired leaves are hammered in a short sequence of chevrons. Having trained initially as a painter, the artist was taught silversmithing not in the Navajo community of his upbringing (Steamboat area, south of Chinle), but rather by a nun at St. Catherine’s Catholic Indian High School in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
