DescriptionA field desk belonging to Capt. Zenas H. Bliss. Rectangular box with drop front (1.1) secured by a lock with key (1.2); 2 interior drawers and dividers for papers. The exterior is shellaced poplar; the interior is poplar (a common Eastern wood.) Drawers are poplar. No maker's mark. The joinery is hand cut dovetail. The dividers are rabbetted. Hinges are steel; pulls are brass. The jack chain is a recent replacement. The lock is brass. The front escutcheon is missing. The handles are cast iron. The key (1.2) is iron or steel and of the period, but not original according to Arthur Bliss.
