DescriptionLarge heavy padlock (A) or church lock, iron, with a bar across the top and a skeleton key. Mexican, Spanish Colonial period. Round-stock shakle bar, banded on end, curves down into squared joint and riveted to a small plate extending beyond lock plate. It is riveted here, and a small face is engraved upon rivet pad. The hasp, when in place in its slot on the lock plate is profusely decorated with hatched borders and other banded elements. The lock plate itself squared at the top and rounded at the base, is as well decorated in lined and hatched chisel engravings. Comes complete with its original drill-pin variety iron key of round stock (hollow), and kidney-shaped bow, with simple banded decoration on its shaft.
