DescriptionThis example of a funeral nameplate is part of a set etched on a metal plate that is attached to stone. This nameplate has an oval shape with four small ridges in the lower and upper corners. Inside a decorated border is cursive script lettering for Nina Lee Bliss and a cursive abbreviation of the ligature Æ, meaning aged in Latin, followed by 7 Months 9 d's. signifying nine days. The etched text is silver around the dark metal surface. Nina Bliss was the daughter of Captain Zenas Harrison Bliss and Sarah Shelton. Metal funerary nameplates, also known as coffin plates, were decorative adornments attached to a coffin or grave marker.
