Judy Chicago is well known for her bold feminist art. Pregnant Amazon belongs to her series, Birth Project, in which Chicago collaborated with more than 150 needleworkers to create a images relating to the experiences of the birth process. Birth Project was conceived as Chicago was working on visualizing a reinterpretation of the myth of Genesis from a female perspective, which she had written in collaboration with a radical nun. While seeking images of birth, her search turned up almost nothing so she decided to pursue the subject further, turning directly to women to learn about their birth experiences and utilize those stories in the development of the images.
