DescriptionThis muslin painting is one of two by Jaw that depict the events around the arrest and killing of Sitting Bull at Standing Rock Reservation on December 15, 1890. The other painting is in the collection of the State Historical Society of North Dakota. It is possible that both were originally collected or commissioned by the ethnomusicologist Frances Densmore in 1913-1914, during her stay at Standing Rock while conducting research for her 1918 publication Teton Sioux Music. Jaw, who was among those living at Standing Rock at the time of Sitting Bull's death, was one of Densmore's informants. On View
