DescriptionA charcoal drawing of a crowd of soldiers and others surrounding a central figure who kneels beneath the weight of the crucifix he carries on his bare shoulder. Traditional Christian iconography identifies the kneeling man as Jesus Christ, and the soldiers his Roman persecutors. A man stands above Christ and raises a whip with knotted tails as if to strike him with it.
