DescriptionThis campaign button was produced for Gerald Ford’s 1976 bid for the United States presidency. Ford assumed the presidency as the 38th president following Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974, but was defeated by Jimmy Carter in the 1976 election. He remains the only U.S. president never elected to the office. Appointed vice president in 1973 after Spiro Agnew's resignation, Ford ascended to the presidency when Nixon stepped down. However, his 1976 campaign was tarnished by widespread backlash over his controversial decision to pardon Nixon for his crimes. The button has a photo of Gerald Ford with his wife, Elizabeth Ford. There is black text sitting above the portrait that reads "MEET PRESIDENT AND MRS. FORD."On View
