Jack Garver created energized images after World War II which in their gutsy confidence and complexity rival anything that was happening in New York — the American city that had just replaced Paris as the center of  new art. Cat is an excellent example of the style that he worked in for decades. Garver’s paintings are far from being simple illustrations of a subject; his titles act as oblique personal references for apparently non-objective compositions.

Garver was a central figure in a vibrant (and socially complex) modern art scene occurring in Albuquerque in the 1940s and ‘50s. He and his wife Alice Garver were closely connected with a network of avant-garde artists, poets, and intellectuals in New Mexico and nationwide.
