DescriptionThis map is one of the earliest depictions of the world, with Jerusalem in the center and descriptions summarizing what was known in the natural world in 1493 on the lower half. Figures are drawn in the decorative margins. The Old Testament figures of Ham, Shem, and Japhet surround Jerusalem. The twelve figures indicate the prevailing directions of the winds, and the figures on the left are the mythical beings living in the earth's farthest regions. The map's shape is a semi-circle rather than a full rectangular view and many of the land masses appear distorted in size and shape. On View
