Barbara Latham’s use of thin paint and bright hues in her depiction of a small farmstead demonstrates her illustrative style. The community of Talpa is located on the south side of Taos; like much of the area, it is and has historically been home to many farmers and artists. Latham studied with modernist painter Andrew Dasburg in New York and traveled to Taos in 1925 to create graphic illustrations of southwestern life for Joseph O'Kane Foster's greeting card company. While there, she met fellow artist Howard Cook, whom she married and the couple settled in Talpa in 1938. Latham is well known for her landscape paintings as well as her lithographs, wood engravings, and children’s book illustrations.
