Enrique Montenegro was an integral figure in the lively modern art world of Albuquerque in the 1940s and 1950s. As a painting professor at UNM, Montenegro championed a young Richard Diebenkorn (later a famous California painter) whose graduate degree was threatened with nullification when recalcitrant realist painting professors resisted Diebenkorn’s urge to paint in the abstract expressionist style that was even in the late 1950s already becoming passé in New York. Montenegro’s Reclining Nude demonstrates some of these exact tensions hovering between figuration and abstraction. This painting puts the viewer on the front lines of an aesthetic battle so fierce that it led to literal fistfights. Abstraction would definitively win for a time, at least until younger artists would in turn fight to bring back the figure. In this way, the viewer can find in Montenegro’s painting either timeliness or timelessness.
