DescriptionThe Sengbusch Self-Closing Inkstand Company first patented this design in 1907. The founder, Gustav Sengbusch, grew frustrated as his inkwells constantly spilled over. He decided to dedicate himself to designing a better, cleaner inkwell. He eventually created the self-closing inkwell, which allowed users to insert their pen while the opening automatically closed after the pen was removed. Sengbusch patented his design and founded The Sengbusch Self-Closing Inkstand Company in 1907. This particular inkwell is made entirely of glass, with a base and ink compartment. The base features special contours for placing pens or pencils. This object is significant as it highlights the succession of innovations in writing tools that have contributed to shaping the world we live in today.
