Through a cacophony of mark making, figures- both animal and human emerge in one of Roy De Forest’s fantasy worlds. There is no discernible ground or perspective, just a chaotic and funky swirl of characters that one could easily get lost in. Through carefully placed uses of bright colors, certain characters and moments within the composition are highlighted. De Forest studied at the California School of Fine Arts from 1950-1952 and received his BA and MA degrees from San Francisco State College. His earlier work in the 1950s included scrap metal constructions and two dimensional works featuring mazes and abstract patterns; he began incorporating animals and fantastical images into his art beginning in the 1960s and commonly featured dogs as central characters.
