DescriptionA street scene of 300 block of West Railroad Avenue in New Town, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The road is unpaved and groups of pedestrians fill the streets, gathered in waiting postures. Male children, some barefoot, wearing newsboy flat caps, sit on the sidewalks edge and cluster at the end of a large standing group in the street. Behind them stand women in dresses, shawls, and open umbrellas overhead. Men in fedoras and bowler hats, and girls in white, shin length dresses with cinched waists and bellowing skirts, stockings, and picture hats litter the crowd. Behind the crowd is a line of brick two-story storefronts. "ALBUQUERQUE HARDWARE Co." is on the street corner with a "COOK WITH GAS" sign hanging horizontally from the second story. Trees and electric poles line the streets.

New Town was one of the first Anglo settlements on Tiwa land in what is now Albuquerque, established about two miles east of Albuquerque's first Hispanic city center (contemporary Old Town). New Town spanned the railyards district and a few blocks west in Albuquerque's downtown.

Railroad Avenue is now called Central Avenue and runs east to west through downtown. Albuquerque. "Railroad Avenue" came from being located along the city's railway and depot. The name was changed between 1907 and 1908. Central Avenue also overlaps with sections of the historic Route 66 Highway.
