DescriptionRailroad Avenue in New Town, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Utility poles with wires line the street. A man walks under the covered walkway of the European Hotel to the left. The Metropolitan House hotel and restaurant is to the right. Trolley tracks run down the center of Railroad Avenue. In the distance, on the right, is the peaked corner of the Grant Opera House. New Town was one of the first Anglo settlements on Tiwa land in what is now Albuquerque, established about two miles east of Albuquerque's first Hispanic city center (contemporary Old Town). New Town spanned the railyards district and a few blocks west in Albuquerque's downtown.
Railroad Avenue is now called Central Avenue and runs east to west through downtown. Albuquerque. "Railroad Avenue" came from being located along the city's railway and depot. The name was changed between 1907 and 1908. Central Avenue also overlaps with sections of the historic Route 66 Highway.
