DescriptionThe intersection of Railroad Avenue and First Street in New Town, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Utility poles and wires line the street and a trolley track runs down the middle of the street. To the left of the street is the European Hotel under renovation. To the right is Metropolitan House.New Town was one of the first Anglo settlements on Tiwa land in what is now Albuquerque, established about two miles east of Albuquerque's first Hispanic city center (contemporary Old Town). New Town spanned the railyards district and a few blocks west in Albuquerque's downtown.
Railroad Avenue is now called Central Avenue and runs east to west through downtown. Albuquerque. "Railroad Avenue" came from being located along the city's railway and depot. The name was changed between 1907 and 1908. Central Avenue also overlaps with sections of the historic Route 66 Highway.
