DescriptionThis brass sign for the store Miss Harkin Dress & Mantle Maker is a rectangular sign with small holes in each corner, designed for mounting onto a surface. The text is engraved into the metal, with each letter indented and filled with black coloring for contrast. The word "Dress" and the ampersand symbol are rendered in an ornate Old English-style font and the remaining text also has capitalized lettering. The plate’s smaller size indicates that it would have been used at the entrance of the store rather than facing out to the street. A common term in the tailoring trade, particularly for women's clothing, a mantlemaker typically makes overcoats, and mantles are loose garments worn over other clothing. This artifact serves as both a marker of trade and a glimpse into historical craftsmanship. On View
