DescriptionThis pencil was made to promote the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, which was incorporated in 1842 and was the oldest continuous writer of insurance policies in the United States. The pencil is a maroon color with black text on each visible face. One line of text reads "MUTUAL LIFE INS CO OF NY." Another line of text reads "RICHARD A. McCURDY, PRESIDENT." Richard A. McCurdy was the president of the Mutual Life Company from 1885 to 1906. The last visible line of text reads "THE LARGEST AND BEST COMPANY IN THE WORLD." There is heavy signs of wear throughout the pencil, as well as some markings of numbers on the exposed wood at the end. The pencil appear to have been sharpened with a knife, which would correspond with its age.
