Daniel Murphy

lived early-mid-1900s
BiographyDaniel Murphy was an Irish-American hotelier who played a pivotal role in the development of Albuquerque's hospitality industry during the early 20th century. Before moving to New Mexico, he honed his skills in the hotel business in New York City. In 1937, anticipating the realignment of Route 66 through Albuquerque, Murphy left his position as manager of the Franciscan Hotel to open the El Vado Auto Court Motel. Located along Central Avenue near the Rio Grande and Old Town, the El Vado was designed in the Spanish Pueblo Revival style, featuring 32 units with covered carports arranged in two parallel, one-story buildings facing a parking courtyard. The name "Vado," meaning 'ford' in Spanish, was chosen to reflect the motel's proximity to the historic ford crossing of the Rio Grande at Bridge Street.
