Michigan, 1882 - 1947
BiographyWm. D. Hardy & Company department store was built and ran by William D. Hardy (Springport, Michigan, July 29, 1855 - March 29, 1919). In 1882, he purchased a dry goods store owned by Burnham Stoepel and Company of Detroit, Michigan. The business, now known as the William D. Hardy Company, is located at 311 West Western Avenue, and is one of the leading stores of Muskegon. The Hardy Store Fire of 1946 did nearly $17 million damage to the heart of the city’s Western Avenue business district and was the worst fire in Muskegon's history starting in the Hardy company store. Subsequent litigation between the parties operating Hardy's Department Store on Pine Street agreed in 1947 to merge its operations with a newly opened Herpolsheimer's branch location in Muskegon and proceed as Hardy-Herpolsheimer's.
