Albuquerque Rockhounds ClubAlbuquerque, New Mexico, founded ca. 1952
The Albuquerque Rockhounds Club, founded to take members on trips to various locations in New Mexico to go rock hunting and collect mineral specimens, has promoted ethical collecting and conservation of the state's geological heritage and has contributed to further scientific discoveries and documentation. Additionally, guest speakers with experience in geology would be included during the club's meetings, notably Sherman A. Wengerd (1915-1995), an outstandingly influential geologist and educator who met with the group in 1953 to discuss Naval explorations in the Arctic. The Albuquerque Rockhounds Club significantly promoted geological education through its field trips, guest speakers, workshops, and organized community outreach.
