BiographyAlbuquerque International Sunport (IATA: ABQ, ICAO: KABQ, FAA LID: ABQ) is the primary international airport serving the state of New Mexico. The Albuquerque International Sunport, known for its Pueblo Revival architecture, is the state’s largest commercial airport, welcoming over 5 million passengers per year. The original building broke ground in 1937 with a building designed by Ernest Blumenthal and a large hanger designed to accommodate the Boeing 307 Stratoliner. The airport opened in 1939 with 2 paved runways and within two years of opening, the Albuquerque Army Air Base, which became Kirtland Air Force Base, was constructed just to the east to share the runways and facilities. Originally called Albuquerque Municipal Airport it was renamed in 1963 to Albuquerque Sunport. A larger terminal was constructed in 1965 to the east of the original terminal and has been expanded seval times over the years.
