DescriptionMen work in a corral to brand cattle. Two men hold down a calf and a third man uses a branding iron to brand the calf's hide. A fourth man is on horseback, driving a herd of cattle to the back of the corral.A typed caption on the back of the photograph reads, "While one New Mexico cowboy puts the finishing touches on branding a calf another mounts his horse and twirls his lariat to catch another calf for the same treatment. Branding time means hard work for cowboys in New Mexico, where the cattle industry is still big business. The brand is applied usually on the flank of the calf by means of a red-hot iron which carries the trademark of the owner."
