DescriptionA safe owned by Manuel Armijo, wood and metal with drawers inside. Each drawer has wording painted on in French. Nails driven into the hand-hewn wood make it practically indestructible. Painted a dark blue.

The safe was made especially for General Manuel Armijo, according to Armijo's niece Flora Baca, who inherited it upon his death in 1853. The Bacas loaned it to the U.S. government for use at Fort Craig, near Socorro, during the Civil War in 1862. If the safe actually predates 1846, Manuel Armijo may have used it during his flight south along the Chihuahua Trail, prior to Kearny's occupation of Nuevo Mexico.
