DescriptionThis campaign button was produced for Walter Mondale's 1984 Presidential election, along with his running mate, Geraldine Ferraro. Walter Mondale, the former vice president under Jimmy Carter, ran for president in the 1984 election as the Democratic nominee. His campaign focused on expanding social programs and addressing economic inequality, but he faced an uphill battle against incumbent President Ronald Reagan, who was enjoying strong approval ratings due to a recovering economy and a more optimistic national mood. Mondale’s candidacy was overshadowed by Reagan's popularity, and he suffered a significant defeat, winning only his home state of Minnesota and the District of Columbia. Despite the loss, Mondale's 1984 bid remains notable for his selection of Geraldine Ferraro as his vice-presidential running mate, making her the first woman to appear on a major party ticket. The button is mostly blue, with red and white stripes near the bottom. White text in the center reads "MONDALE / FERRARO."
