DescriptionThis campaign button was produced for Wendell Willkie's 1940 campaign for the United States presidency and his running mate, Charles L. McNary. Before running for the presidency, Willkie was the corporate president for the utilities company, Commonwealth & Southern Corporation. Willkie spent his time with C&S battling the federally funded Tennessee Valley Authority, that supplied power in competition with C&S. Willkie then decided to run for president through a fractured Republican party, running on an interventionist bill. Willkie lost the election to incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt. The button is red, white and blue, with blue text in the center. Text reads "WILLKIE /AND / McNARY."On View
