DescriptionThis extra-large cast-iron pot or cauldron originates from the late 1800s and is cast in two parts, as illustrated by the visible weld seam on the exterior. Used for making chicharrones (boiling and rendering lard), the cauldron likely served an important role in everyday life for cooking and heating up food in the home. The pot itself includes rounded edges throughout and an outer lip that is slightly flared outwards. There are several chips throughout the lipped upper edge, which appear to have penetrated slightly beyond it, and into the upper base portion of the tool. Upon inspecting the interior of the cauldron, substantial corrosion is visible along the bottom surface and side, while white coloration appears around the upper interior, creating a ring-like shape, contouring the cauldron's form. The white discoloration may be a result of mineral deposits from long-term usage of water in the pot. Taking a closer look at the exterior surface of the cauldron, considerable corrosion, along with darkened discoloration, is visible throughout. Acting as an important cooking tool, cast iron instruments such as this one offered both versatility and durability.
