DescriptionThis circular metal container for peppermints comes from the Lajaunie Pharmacien of Toulouse and features a central vibrant mustard yellow and floral background in the center with dark text on the front and back. The pharmacy’s address, “19, Rue D’Aubuisson,” is displayed at the top in curved lettering, while the name “Lajaunie” stands out prominently over a lighter band for emphasis. At the bottom, the price, “3 Francs,” (approximately $5.44 at that time, or $112.74 today with inflation) is also presented in curved text, completing the symmetrical layout. The container’s edges are short and cylindrical, decorated with evenly spaced thin dark lines. Small oval-shaped openings along the sides provide practical functionality, aiding in opening the container. Inside, the tin was designed to hold peppermints, a popular product of the pharmacy. The reverse side includes further details in French, including a warning about counterfeit competitors in Toulouse and Bordeaux: “Se méfier des nombreuses contrefaçons.” This container exemplifies how some businesses from the early-20th century were internationally-known and companies utilized specific packaging.
