Although he was better known as a painter and illustrator, William Penhallow Henderson designed and carved exquisite furniture in the arts and crafts tradition. Occasionally, Henderson’s patterns reflect the aesthetics of Native American design, but the designs on this chair are reminiscent more of decorative leather tooling patterns found commonly on Mexican style saddles and leather goods. Henderson was also a muralist for the Works Progress Administration. He designed and supervised the construction of several significant buildings in northern New Mexico, including the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe.
