Fritz Scholder’s abstract landscape, Paradise, was one of the artist's earlier works, produced for his Masters of Fine Arts Thesis show at the University of Arizona, Tucson. The loose and expressive use of paint and mix of both vivid and muted colors depict more of an emotive landscape than a literal representation of the earth. As with many of Scholder’s paintings there is a push and pull between total abstraction and a realistic depiction. Paint drips and splatters are layered with more controlled brushstrokes; a style that would remain a prominent feature throughout Scholder’s career.
