One of the most influential figures in modern New Mexican art history, Self Portrait is one of Jonson’s earlier works, confidently painted in the pointillist manner developed in France 30 years earlier by artists including Georges Seurat. This work was painted before his move to New Mexico, Jonson arrived in 1924, later joining the art faculty at the University of New Mexico. The Jonson Gallery at the University Art Museum is named for him. He established the gallery and residence in 1950 and it soon became a major force in the development of modern art in the Southwest. In the 1930s Raymond Jonson and other members of the Transcendental Painting Group developed a vision of completely non-objective painting.
