DescriptionDocument, original Letter of resignation, ink and paper by James Longstreet, 1861 while in Albuquerque. When news of the firing on Fort Sumter arrived in Albuquerque in May of 1861, officers who had delayed making a decision on loyalties were forced to choose sides. One such officer was Paymaster Major James Longstreet, a forty year old West Point graduate and veteran of the U. S. - Mexican War. Born in South Carolina, Longstreet had strong southern sentiments, but a loyalty to the Union. Several officers tried to dissuade him from leaving the service.On View
