DescriptionThis early twentieth-century piano roll features music from "The Geisha" (1896), with its score written by conductor and composer Sidney Jones (1861-1946). Emerging in commercial usage during the late nineteenth century, music rolls like this one allowed for music to be played mechanically, usually with a piano, through its inclusion of instructional holes on the paper. This music roll sits in a rectangular box and is reminiscent of a scroll. The paper roll extends into a rectangular shape and features a pointed, triangular ending, which includes a small, metal ring, possibly for attaching to a portion of the instrument. The ending of the roll also includes a slightly darker-colored section, highlighting the patent dates in Britain, the United States, Germany, and France, while below it reads an "Important notice", emphasizing the correct way to re-roll the paper, and explaining the function of the adjustable flange. At the bottom, "Geisha. / Selection, / Sidney Jones" is written within a circular space. The entirety of the bottom, darker section of the scroll is enveloped with sepia-colored, detailed ink embellishments of foliage and scrollwork designs.On View
