DescriptionThis kaleidoscope consists of a wooden base with a sliding compartment that houses a circular, glass-covered viewing disk. The disk features a swirling red and black pattern and is encased in a brass ring. A hand-cranked pulley mechanism, attached to a string, allows the disk to spin, creating an optical illusion when in motion. The device is housed in a long, shallow wooden tray with sections for storage and operation. Unlike traditional handheld kaleidoscopes, which rely on mirrors and loose objects to create shifting patterns, this version produces movement through its spinning disk. This piece reflects the era’s fascination with visual trickery and mechanical amusements, aligning with the broader history of scientific curiosity. On View
