DescriptionThe Ernie Pyle memorial at Ie Shima, Japan. The cement form is an isosceles-trapezoid representing the 77th Infantry Division's shoulder sleeve patch, the division that Ernie Pyle was serving with when he was killed. A plate has been embedded into the front that shows the statue of liberty and a plaque below it reads, "At this spot the 77th Infantry Division lost a buddy Ernie Pyle 18 April 1945". The monument is on top of a small area of terraced grass with a cement foundation pad. People walk on the grass in the background and also sit among tall trees that are growing near a low wall that surrounds the area. There are also three speakers installed beside the monument.
