DescriptionThis teddy bear was produced in 1903 by the Steiff company, founded by Margarete Steiff in Germany. Originally established in 1880, the company began when Margarete—a skilled seamstress—started selling handmade stuffed elephants intended as pincushions. Children soon began playing with them, prompting her to shift her focus to designing toys specifically for children. This particular teddy bear is brown and wears a brown mohair sweater vest with two buttons featuring anchor emblems. More than just a toy, this object represents the remarkable story of a woman who transformed a domestic skill—sewing, traditionally expected of women—into the foundation of a successful business. Margarete Steiff defied societal limitations of the late 19th century, using her talent and creativity to build an internationally recognized company and leave a lasting legacy in the world of toys.On View
