DescriptionJapan has a long history of producing small, handcrafted ceramic toys, known as Kyodo gangu. These pieces often depict traditional folk tales and characters that have emerged throughout the country’s rich history. The toys are typically handmade, with techniques passed down through generations. Around the turn of the century, these small toys began to appear worldwide as Japan opened its doors to the West. The piece is green and features a small, animal-like character sitting down. With painted details in white, black, red, and yellow, the figure has eyes, a mouth, whiskers, and toenails. Straw extends from the top of the toy’s head, representing hair. This piece is significant because it offers a glimpse into this delicate Japanese tradition. On View
