DescriptionThis metal dairy scale was purchased through the Montgomery Ward catalog, the first-ever mail-order catalog. Founded in 1872, Montgomery Ward's mission was to provide rural Americans with the same access to goods as those living in cities. The company played a pivotal role in the growth of the mail-order catalog business throughout the 20th century, remaining at the forefront of the industry until mismanagement led to its collapse in the 1990s. The scale itself is primarily white with black metal edges and sides. Its front face features a metal clock hand, which is bent and rusted. Just above the hand, the text reads, “DAIRY SCALE / 60LB CAPACITY.” The white surface of the clock is heavily stained and dirty. Metal hooks at the top and bottom of the scale allow for easy hanging. This item is significant because it represents a time of transformation, when rural areas began to become more connected with the wider world, marking a shift in society and commerce. On View
