Before moving to New Mexico, Leon Trousset began his American career painting landscapes for the new landed gentry in California. He visited Albuquerque almost 180 years after the villa was founded and painted this lively scene. He provides a glimpse of what Plaza Vieja might have been like in 1885 with its citizens bustling about town, Native Americans selling watermelon and peaches, and San Felipe de Neri church in the background flanked by a 121-foot flagpole.
