DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of five adults and several young children talking and socializing on a street in Chichicastenango, Guatemala. One of the seated women cradles a child, its face obscured by a hooded parka, while speaking with a man and woman seated next to her on crumbling concrete steps. Another woman stands behind the group with a child wrapped in a sling on her back while speaking with a man. The three women are each dressed in patterned textiles common among the Maya of Guatemala and Mexico, including floral tops and long, striped skirts. Their hair is braided or otherwise pulled back. The two men, by contrast, wear more modern clothing -- jeans, button-up shirt, jacket -- along with a large woven bag decorated with Indigenous Maya designs. A young boy sits against the wall in the background, nearly outside the frame. On View
