Longtime musician, artist, and teacher Frank McCulloch has left an indelible mark on Albuquerque. In the early 1980s McCulloch was traveling back and forth between Albuquerque and Roswell, where he was an artist in residence, and what he saw on these trips inspired him. He was particularly interested in exploring the horizontal nature of this particular landscape from a wide-angle perspective. Light and color were also primary concerns in both his paintings and lithographs. He had done other smaller-scale paintings during this time using airbrush methods. He found the use of acrylic paint safer, and it also allowed for the overlaying of colors, which led him to experiment with texture as well as light and transparency in this work.
