BiographyPainter and musician Darren Vigil Gray was born in 1959 in Dulce, New Mexico. His father was a rancher, rodeo cowboy, and guitarist and his mother had studied operatic voice in college. He began studying art in 1975 while enrolled in the high school program of the Institute of American Indian Arts. He then studied at the College of Santa Fe from 1978 to 1979 and the University of New Mexico from 1985 to 1986 before painting full time starting in 1986. Gray was mentored by T.C. Cannon and is inspired by Abstract Expressionists including Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock, as well as artists like Richard Diebenkorn. His work is in collections including National Museum of American Arts, Denver Art Museum, and the Museum of Mankind in Vienna, Austria.
