John Marin1870 Rutherford, New Jersey - 1953 Addison, Maine
John Marin is among a coterie of important early American Modernists like Georgia O’Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, and D.H. Lawrence who were first invited to New Mexico by Taos bohemian doyenne Mabel Dodge Luhan (1879-1962), and who subsequently found great inspiration here. He is best known for his watercolors, which deftly combine ruggedness and delicacy, space and density – much like the beautiful New Mexican landscapes he abstracted into his restless compositions.
