John Stermer (1920-1991) was a native of Elmira, New York, and served four years in the SeaBees during World War II. After the war, he studied and taught at the Art Studends League in New York City, then painted and lived in France and Spain for ten years. Stermer and his family settled in southern New Mexico where the vast spaces of sky and mountains inspired his painting for thirty years. He was a member of the New Mexico State Arts Commission for a decade, served on the board of the New Mexico Symphony and founded the Mimbres Region Arts Council.
