Alfred E. Smith1873 New York, New York - 1994 New York, New York

Alfred Smith served as the 42nd governor of New York from 1919 to 1920 and from 1923 to 1928. Despite his loss in the 1928 presidential election, his campaign still significantly impacted taking steps towards Franklin D. Roosevelt's (1882-1945) New Deal coalition, which preceded the start of the Great Depression. Making an impact in the Southwest, Smith's campaign shed light on major religious and cultural divisions but received support from a portion of Catholic voters in the northern portion of New Mexico.
