George Wallace

George Wallace (1919-1998), the Governor of Alabama, ran for president in 1968 as the candidate for the American Independent Party, capitalizing on growing discontent with the mainstream political establishment. A staunch segregationist and advocate for "law and order," Wallace's campaign appealed to voters who opposed the civil rights movement and the liberal policies of the time. While he did not win, he garnered significant support, particularly in the South, and won five Southern states. Wallace’s third-party bid highlighted the deep divisions in the country during a time of civil unrest and led to a realignment in American politics.
